Initial Consultation For many, the first appointment can be daunting. The overall aim of the first appointment is to develop a shared understanding of the issues or difficulties that prompted you to make the appointment. You can expect to be asked about your current difficulties, relevant background, any previous counseling or therapy experience, and your goals for therapy. At the conclusion of the 50 minute initial consultation we will discuss your individualized therapy or coaching plan.
Subsequent Consultations All subsequent consultations will build on the first appointment. After we have agreed on a course of action (therapy or coaching plan) the subsequent consultations are designed to achieve the overall agreed-upon goal. You can expect these sessions to be:
Practical – you are likely to learn new strategies or skills which we will initially practice in session.
Active – you are expected to be an active participant in the sessions. Like any course or program you may previously have participated in, the more committed you are, the more you will benefit from the experience. You may be asked to monitor moods, thoughts or behaviours, or to read handouts related to the topic.
Focused – we will be working towards achieving your goals, with each consultation having a specific focus. While most people require between 6 – 16 sessions, some people benefit from 1 -2 sessions, and others may need longer term therapy to work through longer-standing issues or difficulties.
